The “Dom zu Brandenburg” (cathedral) is located on an island tucked between Lake Beetzsee and the Havel. The ensemble of cathedral, curia and annexe define cathedral island to this day, which represents the oldest part of the extensively restored town centre of Brandenburg an der Havel.

Here, King Otto I. founded the Diocese of Brandenburg in the year 948. The cathedral's construction commenced in the middle of the 12th century. About 300 years later, in the middle of the 15th century, the gothic cathedral's construction was completed. The precious artefacts stem from all historical periods, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
