Prussian King Wilhelm I and his Chancellor Otto von Bismarck traveled personally to open the racecourse in Hoppegarten on May 17, 1868. With a straight line of 1,200 meters in front of the main grandstand, it offered visitors a particularly exciting racing experience. Just two years later, it received its own rail connection, which made up to 40,000 visitors possible in one day. Hoppegarten quickly developed into the center of horse racing in Germany and at the same time a social meeting place on the eastern edge of Berlin. After the loss of most of the horses at the end of the Second World War, the now “nationally owned racing company Hoppegarten” tried to make a fresh start. Even under socialist conditions there were again bets with “large and small enema”, and women with large hats were not only seen on fashion race day. After 1990 it was only after several changes of ownership that it was possible to bring the splendor of bygone times back to Hoppegarten. The almost 100-year-old grandstand is well preserved and repeatedly serves as a backdrop for open-air concerts. The complex with its ancient trees has the status of a "nationally valuable cultural monument". Around ten racing events take place here every year from April to October. So Hoppegarten has now become a destination for the whole family.
